Mahshid’s schedule is full, but what stands out is how intentionally she plays each role.
On campus, she serves on the executive board of the Pre-Health Club, contributes to DEI initiatives, and manages financial responsibilities as a treasurer. Outside of meetings and events, she’s building experience through labs, internships, and volunteer work. Each space asks something different of her: organization, communication, accountability, curiosity.

Mahshid is part of a generation of young women who left Afghanistan after the return of Taliban rule, a shift that severely restricted access to education and public life for girls. The transition to a new country brings its own challenges—learning new systems, adapting to unfamiliar environments, rebuilding a sense of stability. Even so, she has stepped into leadership roles with confidence and consistency.
There’s no shortcut to that kind of growth. Mahshid has built herself up over time, through showing up prepared, following through on commitments, and learning how to navigate spaces that weren’t always designed with you in mind.
Her work within DEI efforts reflects an understanding of why representation matters. Being present in those conversations, helping shape them, and ensuring they lead to meaningful action takes patience. It also takes a willingness to listen and to speak when it counts.
Serving as treasurer adds another layer of responsibility. Managing funds for an organization demands attention to detail and trust from peers. It’s the kind of role where small mistakes can have real consequences, which makes reliability essential.
Then there’s the work happening beyond titles—time spent in labs, internships that introduce her to the realities of healthcare, and volunteer efforts that keep her connected to the needs of others. These experiences aren’t separate from her leadership.
Mahshid’s journey is still unfolding, but the direction is clear. She’s building a future that reflects both where she’s been and where she’s going. Her presence in these spaces matters—not as a symbol, but as someone actively shaping her path and contributing to the communities around her.
None of this would have been possible without the generosity of donors like you.
