From Afghanistan to the Airfield: A Story of Hope, Learning, and Flight

When I first arrived in the United States, I carried with me many dreams about building a new future. Like many people starting over, I didn't know exactly where my path would lead. Today, I am grateful that my journey has taken me to the skies.

This summer, I have the privilege of serving as the Aviation Instructor at Cherokee Scout Camp in Yanceyville, North Carolina. Although this is a volunteer position while I continue waiting for asylum, it has become one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Every day, I have the opportunity to teach young Scouts about aviation and drone technology while continuing to grow alongside them.

Watching students discover aviation for the first time reminds me why I fell in love with it myself. Whether we're learning the basics of flight or practicing drone operations, I enjoy seeing their confidence grow as they develop new skills.

Learning Never Stops

One of the lessons I have learned is that every new skill creates another opportunity.

Over the past year, I have earned six to seven certifications related to aviation. I recently completed my Recreational Pilot Certificate, and at the end of July I will take my FAA Part 107 Drone License exam. Each certification represents another step toward my long-term career goals.

During our drone lessons, I help Scouts learn not only how to fly safely but also how to position drones to capture beautiful aerial photographs. It is exciting to watch them combine technical skills with creativity.

Outside of aviation, I am also taking an online public speaking course through my college. Strong communication is an important part of leadership, and I know these skills will help me become a better instructor, mentor, and professional throughout my career.

Looking Toward the Future

Our camp takes new Scouts on a field trip to the airport tower in Greensboro. It is one of my favorite experiences because we get to see air traffic controllers at work, learn how they communicate with pilots, safely direct aircraft, and keep airport operations running smoothly.

For me, these visits are especially meaningful because the tower stands next to Guilford Technical Community College, where I will begin pursuing my Airline Mechanic Technician certification this fall. Every time I visit, I can picture myself taking the next step in my aviation journey.

It reminds me that every goal becomes more achievable when you continue learning and never give up.

Bringing My Story With Me

It is a reminder of where I come from and the people who have shaped me. While I am building a future here in the United States, I carry my heritage with me every day. I hope the Scouts I teach learn not only about aviation but also about resilience, kindness, and the value of respecting different cultures and experiences.

One of the greatest gifts this summer has been the friendships I have made. I have met people from many different backgrounds who have welcomed me, encouraged me, and believed in my potential. Their support has helped me continue moving forward, even during uncertain times.

Grateful for Every Opportunity

My journey is still just beginning.

There are more certifications to earn, more lessons to learn, and many goals still ahead. But every class I teach, every Scout I encourage, every new certification I complete, and every friendship I build brings me one step closer to the future I have been working toward.

I am incredibly thankful to everyone who has supported me along the way—especially Afghan Scouts Durham, whose support has helped open doors I never imagined possible.

The sky is no longer just something I look up at.

It is where I hope my future will continue to grow.
