about us

our mission

Afghan Scouts Durham (ASD) is a charitable foundation established in March 2024 to support the female scouts and scout leaders whom the Taliban targeted as “Westernized women.” We aim to help these women advance their education and create a future free from fear and oppression.

our vision

Afghan Scouts Durham is committed to provide stabilizing support, fill educational gaps, and prepare these girls for advanced education and self-sustaining careers with the hope that they will - someday - return as leaders to a free Afghanistan. We offer them inclusive spaces for them to focus on community engagement, personal growth, and social responsibility.

background

PARSA, supported by Boy Scouts of America and The Scout Association of the UK, re-started Afghan Scouting in 2008. When the Taliban overthrew the USA-based government, there were 11,000 active scouts and 600 volunteer scout leaders. The female leaders and leading female scouts were immediately targeted. The girls ASD supports were regional and patrol leaders, and featured in marketing materials. Following the fall of the government, the Afghan Scout Relief Fund (ASRF) stepped in to create pathways to bring these brave leaders and scouts out of Afghanistan. However, because ASRF does not provide on-going support to scouts placed in the USA, Afghan Scouts Durham was established to provide on-going support to refugee scouts during their high school and college educations.
