I attended a pre-college summer program at Stony Brook University, and it was such an insightful learning experience! The program was offered to high school students, and when I found out they had a track focused on cancer biology, I knew right away that I had to apply. Cancer research has always been facsinating to me—I want to help people, understand how diseases work, and someday be part of creating the cures we need. What made it even more special was learning that the university has Afghan clubs. It meant a lot to me to know that there were communities on campus where I can relate to other students like me.

This wasn’t just a summer program for me—it was my first chance to truly explore medicine. It was the first time I got to step into a real lab, use equipment, work with actual human cells. We studied how natural substances like green tea, strawberries, and broccoli affect cancer cells. And to our surprise—they killed the cancer cells! It was crazy to watch.

I felt like I was part of something important, something bigger than just a school project. It gave me a real glimpse of the kind of work I hope to do in the future and that was very exciting.

Outside the lab, I got to experience college life for the first time—attending classes, sleeping in a dorm, and living with roommates (who were awesome, by the way!). I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I had so much fun. We played games, hung out with students from all over, and just got to be ourselves. There was such a positive, welcoming energy everywhere. Even the dining hall food surprised me—it was honestly so good!

And yes, I brought home some souvenirs: a water bottle, stickers, and a notebook that now hold some great memories. But the real takeaway is that I feel so much more confident and excited for what’s next.

I know now, more than ever, that I want to study medicine. This program didn’t just teach me science; it reminded me why I love learning. College doesn’t feel so far away or scary anymore. I’m excited. Yes, I still get nervous about things like being far from home or adjusting to a new routine, but I also feel more ready.

None of this would have been possible without the generosity of donors like you.

Your support gave me the chance to step back into a classroom, step into a lab, and step into my future.

If you want to help more students like me reclaim their education and chase their dreams, please consider donating today.
