More Than Education: Helping Our Students Heal and Thrive

When people hear the stories of our students, they often focus on the incredible milestones—earning top grades, finding internships, volunteering in their communities, and

building new lives in the United States.

What they don't always see are the challenges that continue long after they arrive.

Many of our students spent months or even years waiting for safety after escaping Afghanistan. During that time, they lived with host families in countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh, where access to routine healthcare, including dental care, was often out of reach. Regular cleanings, fillings, and preventive treatment simply weren't possible.

As a result, many students arrived in the United States with untreated dental issues that had grown into more serious problems. Today, dental care has become one of the largest expenses for our organization. Cavities that could have been simple fillings now require extensive treatment, and many students need multiple appointments to restore their oral health.

Despite these obstacles, our students continue to amaze us.

They attend college full-time, maintain outstanding GPAs, work hard at internships and jobs, volunteer in their communities, and continue building bright futures. They remain focused on their education and the opportunities ahead.

At Afghan Scouts Durham, we believe no student should have to choose between pursuing their education and receiving the healthcare they need. By helping cover essential dental care, we aren't just fixing teeth—we're helping students stay healthy, confident, and focused on achieving their dreams.
