New Mexico, New Challenges: Mastura and Mahsid Reach Another Major Milestone

As summer gets underway, two Afghan students supported through our program are already putting their education into practice in meaningful ways.

Mastura and Mahsid recently arrived at Philmont Scout Camp in New Mexico, where they have begun Curricular Practical Training (CPT) internships connected to their medical studies. Their first day on the job marked another important milestone in their journeys that have already required resilience, determination, and a commitment to serving others.

Philmont Scout Camp welcomes thousands of participants each year, creating a fast-paced environment where health and safety are a top priority. Mastura and Mahsid quickly found themselves immersed in hands-on responsibilities, helping support the camp's medical operations during one of its busiest periods. According to the students, their first day involved assisting with numerous "patient" visits and learning how to take vitals as campers arrived and prepared for the summer season.

For students pursuing careers in healthcare, experiences like these provide invaluable opportunities to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings. Working directly with patients, observing medical procedures, and responding to the needs of a large and active community allows them to develop skills that simply cannot be learned from textbooks alone.

Beyond the professional experience, these internships represent something even larger. Both students came to the United States after being displaced from Afghanistan and have worked tirelessly to continue their education despite significant challenges. Each academic achievement, internship placement, and professional opportunity reflects years of perseverance and the support of a community that believes in their potential.

As the summer progresses, Mastura and Mahsid will continue gaining practical healthcare experience while contributing to the well-being of campers and staff. Their work demonstrates not only their dedication to their chosen fields but also the remarkable impact that educational opportunities can have on students rebuilding their futures.
